IBM recently unveiled the World's smallest 2 nm chip. It is a groundbreaking invention because till now the 5 nm chips were the smallest ones delivered in the chip industry.
What does 2 nm Mean?
2 nm is what the companies called a "Process Node". It is just a Marketing Term for the Fabrication Process used by the companies to deflect that the chip has a high density of transistors, higher speed, and reduced power consumption as compared to the previous one. This number has no relation to the size and other physical features of the transistors.
IBM's 2 nm vs 7 nm Process Nodes
The company claims the new chip to achieve 45 percent higher performance and 75 percent lower energy use as compared to today's most advanced 7 nm node chips.
Advantages of 2 nm Chip:
Since Moore's law said that within every two years, the Transistor density will double. As the transistor density increases, the processing speed of a chip increases. Also, the power consumption and heating of the chip decreases. Here are some advantages that the new 2 nm chip can offer:
- Cell phone battery life: The battery life of Cell phones will increase. With the new 2 nm chip, users will have to charge their devices every four days.
- Reduction of Carbon footprint: With the increased power efficiency, the servers and data centers will consume less power which will reduce the overall Carbon Footprint.
- Speed up Computer Performance: New 2 nm chip will improve the performance of Laptops and Computers. It will also make the Internet accessibility and computations faster than before.
- Artificial Intelligence: Increased chip performance and energy efficiency will result in the rise of the era of hybrid cloud, AI, and the Internet of Things. This will also improve the precision of Self-Driving Vehicles.
